WaMu sunscreen – a sign of recent times

As you’ve seen, I like history.

But getting caught up in too much history can be a problem because you never think about the moment or your next step.

Still, when I found this Washington Mutual, or WaMu, sunscreen packet in our garage, I thought: Man, look at that catchphrase.

It says, “Plan for sunny days.”

We picked it up a few years ago right after we entered the Fourth of July celebration at Gas Works Park in Seattle. At the time, WaMu sponsored the event.

There was more optimism back then.

You’ve probably read about what happened to WaMu. Or you might have had a WaMu mortgage or know someone who worked there. So, there’s no need to repeat what happened.

This year, JPMorgan Chase & Co. backed the Seattle tradition. Future sponsorship, though, is in the air, The Seattle Times reported.

I also found this packet on what was one of the hottest Sundays this summer in the Seattle area.

Given the weekend heat, the catchphrase and what we now know about the now-closed financial institution, the definition of irony quickly came to mind.

As copy editors reminded me and other reporters over the years, irony is often associated with something that is tragic.
