A fishing vessel in Seattle rests on a hot day

I’m back in blogging mode after spending some time with my cousins who were visiting from Southern California.

We had a great time exploring Seattle. We basically did all the things that I love to do.

We bought hamburgers at Dick’s (which, by the way, opens daily at 10:30 a.m. in case you need a burger that early), dined on yummy Cantonese food at Hing Loon and dropped by Lake View Cemetery to pay our respects to Bruce Lee.

Also on our itinerary was a stroll through Fishermen’s Terminal (where we ate fish and chips for dinner) and a stop at what is popularly known as the Ballard Locks.

It’s the passage between the fresh water lakes and the saltwater in the Seattle area. It’s a fun place to watch boats.

All these places worked out well, especially since my cousins have two teenagers and we could beat the recent heat by being close to the water.

Plus, my son had relatives around the house. My cousins were kind enough to bring gifts for him, including a maze for marbles and a toy where you pull a cord and a round, plastic top flies in the sky.

My mom’s sister, Aunt Nell, also was in town and joined us for the fun.

The fishing boat in the picture caught my attention because I like its extended two-level area for the crew.

And if you’re a burger fan, Dick’s is a Seattle institution. I had heard that Gary Locke, who is now the U.S. Commerce Secretary, enjoyed going there.

He is the former Washington state governor and a long-time Seattle resident. During an interview years ago, I asked him about it. He flashed a smile and a thumbs up.

When my cousins and I were at Dick’s on Friday, I bumped into Roger Oglesby, my former publisher and editor when I worked at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

He, too, was getting delicious grub for the road. We had a friendly chat.

My cousins’ reaction to dining on Dick’s burgers: “This hits the spot.”

And on Friday, our replacement coffee grinder from Starbucks arrived. So, I’m happy about that.

This weekend, I’ll be catching up on blog posts. My goal is to post another tofu recipe by next week.

During our fish-and-chips dinner by the water, Peter (who’s 2 and a half) chased a seagull then rushed back to our table and dipped a French Fry into his vanilla ice cream! When a passerby took a photo of all of us and began to walk away, Peter remarked, “She’s a nice lady!”

All in the heat as we cooled by the water and enjoyed the Fishermen’s Memorial statue.

I was wondering when I would hear about Alex’s visit with you, Dan, and Peter. Sounds like you had a good time in the sizzling weather. Did Lauren and Marc play with Peter? That Peter – his comment about the lady who took the photo doesn’t surprise me. I’ll clue Aunt Lai in on the blog so that she can read about Alex’s family’s visit.
