When it comes to the ocean, respect and appreciation enter the mind
I attended college in Santa Cruz, Calif., which is home to a surfing museum and the Cold Water Classic.
When we were teenagers, my friends and I pedaled our bicycles to Sunset State Beach, which is south of Santa Cruz, to go camping near tall dunes and watch the surf roll in under the moon.
I’ve lived on Guam in the western Pacific Ocean. I once went swimming with a local guy, who brought a short spear with him.
He returned with two or three fish. Biologists there explained to me the importance of coral.
And years ago, I visited Hawaii and went snorkeling.
Martial artist Bruce Lee was fond of saying: “Be like water.”
If there’s one lesson that I learned over the years: Respect the ocean and the life it supports.
My thanks to Vincent Laforet for posting his incredible work on Vimeo.
