Protect that suitcase! It reportedly has tofu belonging to Leona Lewis

As bright as day, it stood out online in a Nov. 5 blog post from Starpulse for the world to see:

I take tofu everywhere with me in my suitcase. We get to these random places in Germany that don’t even know what a vegetarian is.

Just as you see above, Starpulse uses quotation marks around the statement and announces in the headline that: “Leona Lewis Carries Tofu In Her Suitcase.”

In the espionage world, that sentence would make for one of the better code phrases to have surfaced. But I think Starpulse is referring to this sentence in the literal sense.

When I first saw the blog headline and post, I thought it was interesting – something I’d have to investigate given that it centered around bean curd.

Starpulse doesn’t say when she said it or how they obtained the quote. Should I contact her publicist to confirm that she actually said it?

Then, I thought: Who’s Leona Lewis?

I might know details about the origins of tofu and Chinese history. But when it comes to pop culture, I kind of draw a blank with Leona Lewis.

I know who Huey Lewis is. But I’m afraid I’m off by a few decades.

I also realize that Sesame Street is going to celebrate its 40th birthday on Tuesday.

So, I did what everyone does these days when you’re in the dark, feeling clueless about the billions of factoids floating out there: I went to a search engine – in this case Google News.

That might not have been the most fruitful because the first item that popped up, on my search of her name, was an item from E! Online.

The headline was catchy but I don’t know if it helped answer my question:

Fashion Police: Leona Lewis’ Dress Is So Fierce It’ll Slap You in the Face

Yes, I get the idea. She likes fashion and wore a black dress to an event.

She apparently performed at MTV’s European Music Awards recently and performed her new song, “Happy,” according to E! Online.

This is better. It looks like she’s a singer.

What else about her singing career? How does this relate to tofu?

Well, here’s what E! Online continues with:

She had walked the red carpet in harem pants so we weren’t expecting too much from her stage style. But then the X Factor winner changed into this amazing custom Vivienne Westwood gown for her performance, and whoa! Total diva status….Not only does it flatter her figure, but she goes all the way crazy-fierce evil Barbie – and owns it.

Me: Is the X Factor related to the X Prize?

And she really owns it?

I also wondered whether I was spending too much time on this task.

I finally came across her official Web site and found this quote under the bio section:

Her striking beauty, charmingly down-to-earth personality, and huge, soaring voice has taken over the UK, where her debut Spirit entered the album chart at Number One.

I still wasn’t connecting all the dots with this woman, a dress so fierce that it might hit you, her singing career, beautiful voice and a vegetarian dish, which is made from soybeans and is more than 2,000 years old.

So, I dropped to the bottom of her official Web site and found a link to her recording studio, Sony.

I came across more information about her and glanced at it to figure everything out. This is the first sentence that I spotted about her:

In these frenzied modern times, there are few people who can seemingly slow time and capture a nation’s attention for the duration of a song. But look back to the end of 2006 and Leona Lewis provided those moments every single week.

That sounds nice. But there was no context about tofu.

I later learned in this online blurb about her that she’s from the United Kingdom.

Well, I realize that I should have probably just scanned the Wikipedia entry about her.

I’m still at a loss as to how tofu directly relates to her – at least in the sense of context or a direct quote from her explaining why she reportedly totes it in her suitcase.

Or at least confirming that she does.

Oh, well. It’s late at night as I type this.

One thing I did learn: It looks like she has an official Leona Lewis ringtone.

But I’m not too clear on how to get that from the Sony Web site. For me, the link just goes back to Sony’s homepage.

If she does like tofu and her publicist sees this entry, please know that I’ve posted some delicious recipes on how to prepare it.
