South SF salami factory destroyed in blaze

posted by brad wong on 2009.07.23, under hard news, history

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you’re probably following the four-alarm fire that engulfed the Columbus Salame plant at 465 Cabot Road.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Kevin Fagan is covering the story here. It sounds like no one was seriously hurt. I hope that is the case.

I realize salami is meat and bean curd is not. So, what’s the connection with the fire and this blog?

Like many people these days, I’ve been pretty busy. So, I was glad that I dropped by Starbucks today to buy coffee.

Near a cash register corner, I spotted a recall notice, complete with a photograph, for the Starbucks Barista Blade Grinder. The morning routine at our house quickly came to mind: “That looks like the grinder we use.”

I called the Starbucks recall number of 866-276-2950 and described my product to two representatives. The company posted a notice that starts with ”Laceration Hazard” on its Web site.

Although my machine lacks a special identification number and “Barista” decals outside, it became apparent that I likely had one I shouldn’t be using.

A tofu recipe to come and $5 million worth of U.S. soybeans heading for South Korea

posted by brad wong on 2009.07.06, under bean curd, hard news, soybeans, tofu

I’ll post another tofu recipe this week. I’ve been juggling a few things. Before I forget, I wanted to note a recent soybean purchase that will benefit U.S. soybean farmers and South Korean tofu makers.

I know trade relations can be complex and, at times, controversial. But this was nice to see, especially given the recession. Here goes:

Four Midwestern companies from North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin are expected to haul in $5 million after they agreed last week to export about 275,000 bushels of soybeans to South Korea, The Associated Press reported.

The Korean Federation of Soybean-Curd Industry Cooperatives is buying the beans from SB&B Foods of Casselton, N.D., Brushvale Seed of Breckenridge, Minn., SunOpta of Moorhead, Minn. and The DeLong Co. Inc. of Clinton, Wis.

Media reports: Criminals using Skype to threaten Chinese speakers in U.S.

posted by brad wong on 2009.05.19, under hard news

Mandarin-speaking criminals are using Skype to extort ethnic Chinese in the United States, demanding that some wire money overseas to avoid harm and property damage, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Skype uses the Internet for long-distance phone calls.

Chinese residents in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, as well as ones in Toronto, have received threatening calls, law enforcement officials told the network.

Many of the victims are professionals, including doctors and accountants. Businesspeople, restaurant owners and acupuncturists also have been hit.

Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said early Tuesday she was unaware of people in the city receiving threatening calls. But she planned on checking with others in the department.

The caller apparently demands $10,000 to $30,000 so a relative can be freed from a Chinese jail.
