Floyd Norris, NYT financial correspondent, asks (economically): Why so glum?

I’m back, thinking about the blog and various sundries in life.

What caught my attention on this Thursday was Floyd Norris’ column in The New York Times. The company gave it prime online real estate, at least when I saw it.

His thesis, which has caveats, revolves around more hiring, better consumer spending and the fact that the recession is, most likely, over in the country.

In the news: Cell phone plans, Costco’s CEO chats and Tweeting on a date

I have limited time as I type this. But here are three interesting stories that have popped up in recent days:

Saul Hansell in The New York Times looks at how mobile phone companies come up with their pricing plans – which I think has long been a mystery for ordinary people.

Hansell quotes a Yale economist as saying: “The whole pricing thing is weird.”

Another observation from Hansell regarding the popular iPhone:

When Apple and AT&T started offering the iPhone for $199, plus $30 a month for Internet access, sales shot up, even though the previous deal — $399 for the phone and $20 a month — cost less over a two-year contract.

Another fact, which probably pleases corporate executives and investors but likely will drive the parent of a text-crazed teenager a bit batty:
